Haynes is celebrating its 50th birthday in a very unique and exciting way! This restoration will take a stock Mustang from "barn find" condition to "show car ready" in time for AAPEX/SEMA in 2011. "Project 50" is a DIY car enthusiasts' dream come to reality through the work of Haynes own employees who are DIY enthusiasts. These Haynes employees are the same people who do the teardowns, research, photograph and write Haynes repair manuals. Follow along with the restoration progress through the Live Mustang Cam during business hours or through the Video logs. Join Haynes in the celebration of 50 Years of Do-It-Yourself Automotive excellence with "Project 50"!

1965 Ford Mustang convertible with a 289 V8 engine and C4 automatic transmission. The vehicle will be restored back to the original body color of Twilight Turquoise metallic and an interior style of D6 White Crinkle Vinyl with black appointments.

Project 50 Blog

Haynes Project 50 Blog is an area where you can speak directly to the Haynes team that is working on the Mustang restoration. You can ask them questions or leave them comments about the project. The Haynes team will be announcing news and coming events in the blog to keep you updated on the restoration schedule. As is usually the case with a project such as this, there will be some bumps in the road to the fully restored '65 Mustang convertible. Project 50 Activities for the next three weeks!

Week of December 13: The Haynes Project 50 Mustang body is at the paint/body shop and is being given an inital primer coat. In the Haynes Shop, interior parts are being sorted for re-use or replacement and parts lists are being developed.

Week of December 20: Body work is commencing at the paint/body shop. In the Haynes Shop, chassis and suspension parts are going to be painted.

Week of December 27: The Haynes Offices and Shop are closed for the holidays. We wish you all Happy Holidays from Haynes and the Project 50 Team!

Project 50 Activities for the weeks of Nov 29 and Dec 6

During the week of Nov 29, the Haynes '65 Mustang will undergo cleaning and media blasting of the driveline and suspension components.

For the week of Dec 6, the Mustang body will have media blasting. Then, the Haynes Project 50 team wil reassemble the driveline and suspension components.

Project 50 Activities for the weeks of Nov 15th and 22nd

The Project 50 team is really making progress on the '65 Mustang Convertble restoration. The body and chassis are being media blasted during the weeks of Nov 15th and 22nd. During the week of Nov 15, the engine will be disassembled and inspected. The driveline and suspension components will be cleaned and inspected during the week of Nov 22.

Activities for the weeks of November 1st and 8th, 2010

While part of the Haynes crew is at the Las Vegas 2010 AAPEX/SEMA show, the Project 50 team will be hard at work on the '65 Mustang restoration. We will be sending the Mustang "shell" out for media blasting in preparation for painting. And, back in the Haynes garage, there will be engine and suspension part disassembly. Activities for the weeks of October 18th and 25th, 2010

Project 50 activities include disassembly of the Mustang's suspension, rear axle, steering column, wiring, deck lid and fuel tank. Then, the Mustang "shell" will go out for media blasting in early November. Be sure to check back often for Project 50 news and videos of our restoration work progress.
